The favorites of the arab community

The Arab community is growing in Canada and the vast majority lives either in Quebec or Ontario. This community refers to populations speaking the Arabic language and/or of Arabic culture, in parts of North Africa and Asia. The Arab community includes the majority of the inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula, the Mashreq and the Maghreb who speak variants of Arabic. The major celebrations of this community are Ramadan and Eid el-Fitr.

The jujube (also known as red date or Chinese date), is a fruit native to Central Asia. It has been cultivated in China for more than 4000 years. This small fruit grows on the jujube tree and is about 15 to 30 mm long. The jujube tree is very hardy, this tree which can grow up to 12 meters long can survive temperatures down to -15°C. When the jujube is ripe, it withers and its taste is similar to that of dates.

Eid el-fitr|April 9 to 10, 2024

Eid celebrates the end of the fast in the month of Ramadan. The day begins with a sweet breakfast. Besides the mint tea that accompanies all meals, dates, salads, carrots, zucchini, etc. are commonly eaten during this celebration.

For 30 days, the Muslim community celebrates the revelation of the Koran to the Prophet Muhammad. Every day there is a fast from sunrise until sunset. After a day without eating, many will eat fruits such as dates, figs, apricots or plums, vegetables such as broad beans, zucchini and okra.
